Vertigo

The inner ear is responsible for conveying signals to the brain regarding where the head is with respect to gravity and how the head is moving; therefore, ear problems that cause dizziness most often produce vertigo.

A thorough understanding of how the ear functions and malfunctions is critical to understanding how to evaluate and treat patients with vertigo. The most common ear related causes of vertigo include benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Ménière’s disease, vestibular neuronitis, and superior semicircular canal dehiscence. Once the correct diagnosis is made, each type of ear related vertigo can almost always be managed effectively.
